DE MEVIUS CONSOLIDATES IT’S LEAD IN BAJA SPAIN ARAGÓN

The first stage of the 40th Baja España Aragón ended with Guillaume de Mevius and Mathieu Baumel winning both special stages of the day.

The Belgian driver started the morning with a substantial gap over Lithuania’s Rokas Baciuska, which he increased by over three minutes in the shorter special stage of the day, bringing the gap to more than four and a half minutes. Third place went to Joao Ferreira and Filipe Palmeiro with their Mini, who are seven minutes and forty-six seconds behind the leaders.

Guillaume De Mevius: “The goal now is to try to win, we are on the right track at the moment, but it’s a long race. We were very hot because we had no air in the car in the second part of the stage. Tomorrow we will open the track and we will be careful to try to win the overall. The stage is not important, we just want to win the overall.”

The best Spaniard among the cars was Nani Roma, who today finished the first stage of the Baja España Aragón in fifth place overall and is also the leader of the Spanish Cross Country Rally Championship classification. Roma is 10’58‘’ ahead of second-placed Pau Navarro, while Joao Días will start tomorrow from third overall.

For two of the main contenders, the rally turned into a nightmare in the afternoon. Yazeed Al-Rajhi dropped out at km 147 of the special stage between Torrijo del Campo and Gea de Albarracín due to a mechanical problem while in third position overall. Nasser Al-Attiyah also suffered mechanical problems and lost nearly 20 minutes in the second special stage due to a problem with the rear arm of the Taurus, depriving him of any chance of fighting for the overall podium.

In the truck category, Martin Macik won both specials of the Baja España Aragón on Saturday. Last year’s winner, Javier Mariezcurrena finished the stage with a solid second place, followed by and the Dutch crew led by Richard De Groot.
