60 BIKES AND QUADS IN BAJA SPAIN ARAGON’S PROVISIONAL ENTRY LIST

With four days to go until the closure of the entry lists of Baja Espana Aragon, more than 60 bikes and quads are expected to line up for the start of the 2021 edition of the rally, taking place on 22-24 July in Teruel. Of these sixty riders, 21 are to participate in the FIM World Cup event with the rest being classified in the Open 30 category.

Among bikes, the Spanish armada led by Joan Barreda (four-time winner of the Baja), Joan Pedrero, and Lorenzo Santolino will have to be reckoned with, as well as Rui Goncalves, representing Portugal.

As for Barreda, the rider from Castellon is a veteran of the sport, set to tackle his eleventh Dakar next January. With the Honda he is a strong candidate for the victory, to gain back the title he lost in 2018.

Pedrero awaiting his chance

For Joan Pedrero, a victory in Baja Espana Aragon is yet to be achieved. Third in 2019, this year the veteran Catalan will definitely aim for his first triumph in the event after participating in eleven editions. As one of the top riders in the discipline, Pedrero is another trump card for Spain to take the baton from Frenchman Michael Metge – just like Lorenzo Santolino.

After his debut in the 2019 Dakar Rally, the rider from Salamanca has begun his preparation for the 2022 edition, in which he seeks to put an end to the run of bad luck hitting him for the past two editions. In 2019 it was a crash in the sixth stage, followed by another fall in 2020, resulting in a dislocated elbow. The Spanish rider wants to finish the Dakar, and to that end, he is using rallies as preparation, including Baja Aragon, where he aims for stepping on the podium.

In women’s classification, Sara Garcia, the winner of the 2017 edition in Teruel, and Mirjam Pol, an institution in her country and winner of Dakar’s female classification, will line up for the start.

The battle in quads

In the quad category, Alexandre Giroud from France will be one of the riders to watch in the 37th Baja Espana Aragon. Toni Vingut, from Ibiza, after his Dakar debut in 2020, returns to the tracks of Teruel before tackling the desert classic again in 2022.
In this category, Oscar Romero and Mario Gajo have a record number of wins with three each. The rider from Zaragoza will once again start in his home race, where he hasn’t won since 2015.

The entries will be closed on Friday, 16 July, making the entry lists of the 37th Baja Espana Aragon final.
