38TH EDITION OF BAJA ESPAÑA ARAGÓN PRESENTED IN TERUEL
The 38th edition of the Baja España Aragón Trofeo AVATEL, which will take place from 22nd to 24th July, has been presented to the public. The official presentation of the event took place in the Salón de la Muralla of the Government of Aragon’s headquarters in Teruel, in the presence of Arturo Aliaga, Vice President of the Government of Aragon and Regional Minister for Industry, Competitiveness and Business Development of the Government of Aragon. “This event has been organised keeping in mind that we all have to work to project the image of being capable of organising one of the best of the eight World Cup events. We hope the Baja will live up to its reputation.”
The presentation was also attended by Manuel Rando, President of the Provincial Council of Teruel, Manuel Aviñó, President of the Spanish Automobile Federation, Javier Domingo, Councillor for Tourism, Education and Festivities of the City Council of Teruel, Xavier Bartrolí, President of Octagon Esedos and Roche Murciano, President of the Provincial Association of Teruel Tourist Entrepreneurs.
The Baja España Aragón Trofeo AVATEL will run for the ninth consecutive year through part of the province of Teruel, making its way through the regions of Jiloca, Teruel and Albarracín, including a pass through Gea de Albarracín. The organisers have created a specific classification in all categories for passing through each of the counties and, of course, those with the best times will get prizes.
The 2022 edition will consist of three days of competition. On Friday there will be a timed special stage for the motorbike categories only, starting at half past five in the afternoon in the surroundings of Teruel.
On Saturday and Sunday, the real action will take place for all categories (cars, trucks, quads, motorbikes, trial). On Saturday, 23 July, the stage will start at 6.00h for the cars and at 7.00h for the bikes with just over 400 kilometres against the clock, divided into three special stages.
On Sunday, the competition will resume at 7.00 with the last 159 timed kilometres for all the categories taking part in this year’s Baja España Aragón. On Saturday, the entry list will be officially announced for the rally that will once again see reigning champion Nasser Al-Attiyah on the start line. The Qatari legend is leading a list of more than 300 crews, a record number for the event.
The Baja España Aragón Trofeo AVATEL will again be the only Spanish event scoring for the FIA World Cup for Cross Country Bajas as well as for the FIM Baja World Cup. Besides the two major international series, the rally is also part of the Spanish Cross-Country Rally Championship.
Once again, towns such as Gea de Albarracín, Bañón, Alfambra, Camañas, Cuevas Labradas, Monreal del Campo, Villafranca del Campo, Blancas, Alba, Santa Eulalia and Teruel, among others, will witness the passage of the more than 300 crews.
Like last year, the 38th edition of the Baja España Aragón will again be sponsored by AVATEL for whom “the rally in Teruel combines the indomitable spirit of the event, which is a challenge for all competitors, with the international aspect that allows us to reach further every day with participants from all over the world. Both elements are strongly connected to the essence of Avatel Telecom. We remain linked to the rally in line with our commitment to the sport, and to supporting initiatives that revitalise geographical areas across the territory. In addition, we strongly believe in talent, which is why our Avatel Racing team returns to take part in this race, with Jesús Calleja, Willy Villanueva and Mónica Plaza, an example of the growing importance of female talent in the world of motor racing.”
After two years plagued by the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, the 2022 edition will try to return to normality in both the organisation and the running of the event in which more than 800 people are involved.
In addition, for the second consecutive year, all information of the rally will be available to the public and teams through the “Sportity” app that can be downloaded on mobile devices via Google Play and Apple Store.
The main novelty: Trail category
One of the great novelties of the 38th edition of the Baja España Aragón Trofeo AVATEL is the Trail category, introduced to strengthen the presence of this type of production bikes in top level events. Iván Cervantes and Joan Pedrero, ambassadors of Triumph and Harley-Davidson respectively, will take part in this new category that brings together bikes with Trail and Maxi Trail specifications.
